Days We Have Been Ready To Build & ATG’s Lies

The situation so far…

Days We Have Been Ready To Build...

So 52 days ready to build and no money to pay for anything. Nada. Zilch.

Specifics are as follows;

Build caves – told Production 7 weeks and 3 days ago we were ready to build. Submitted quote for scaffolding. Scaffolding is needed to build the platforms the caves will sit on. Until we have scaffolding, we cannot begin building the caves. After 52 days, still no scaffolding.

Build rocket launch control room – told Production 7 weeks and 3 days ago we were ready to build. Submitted quote for scaffolding (the same quote as the caves as it was all part of one quote). Until we have scaffolding, we cannot build the ‘RLCR’ because it is needed to build the roof which needs to go in first. After 52 weeks, still no scaffolding. By the way — here’s the design for the RCLR.

Rocket Launch Control Room - 1st Floor (Emergency Mode) - 02 Nov 2015

Rocket Launch Control Room – 1st Floor (Emergency Mode) – 02 Nov 2015

Rocket Launch Control Room - Grd Floor (Emergency Mode) - 02 Nov 2015

Rocket Launch Control Room – Grd Floor (Emergency Mode) – 02 Nov 2015

Buses – we need five buses modified to look new and to be suitable for crashing. We had a contractor lined up to do the work. We were told it would take them about six weeks ago. We submitted their quote to Production five weeks ago. They promised to action it immediately. They didn’t. We still have no buses.

Buy Patrol Wagon vehicles – we need two. Production told us they will be bought tomorrow. That was four weeks ago. That’s a lot of tomorrows.

Oasis – Maysaa did a ton of work to get the quote and scope of works ready in time (totally professional as she is a full-qualified architect). Ahmed promised it would be approved by the end of the week. That was three weeks ago. It still has not been approved.

Range Rovers – this is priceless. Literally. Ahmed wants two Range Rovers so he can crash one of them. Total cost just under $250K. This despite the fact the pilot episode Art Dept budget should really be $500K. He said we would get them through Product Placement. That was five weeks ago. Fadi – head of PP – has been emailed by Ray around 10 times about this over the last four weeks. Total number of replies. Zero. Nada. Zilch.

Since arriving in Qatar, ATP has been emphasizing how we are all a team. And yet I have heard from numerous sources that despite the fact ATP has provided us with zero funds to build anything, they have been quietly blaming the Art Dept for not building anything. Even Ahmed has been extremely abusive about the Art Dept.

The only money we have had access to is petty cash which has had to come out of Majid’s own bank account. That’s right. ATP has no legal or financial presence in Qatar — even now — so it depends upon passing petty cash through an employee to pay for trinkets!!! (Is this further proof they are embezzling funds???)

This all seems to reinforce the rumour that ATP has no intention of shooting in Qatar. That it is doing whatever it can to force the shoot back to Jordan. And that it will blame anyone it can (easiest target — Art Dept) to achieve this goal.

What it does not explain is Ahmed. Why is he also blaming the Art Dept? Is he stupid? Is he in on whatever ATP is up to? Has he an alternate plan? Whatever it is, alienating the Art Dept is achieving nothing.

I had a chat with (local unnamed crew member) yesterday. He was appalled about what is going on. He reminded me of a site meeting a few weeks ago about the buses where Ibrahim promised to take responsibility for the buses after our contractor pulled out due to their having been messed about too much by ATP. He made the promise in front of Azmi, Ray, Rita, Hamad, myself, and several other people. When I wrote an email of the minutes of this site meeting, he denied saying it. Everyone was appalled by his bald-faced lie but (local unnamed crew member) was livid. He said that is when it sank in what a complete liar Ibrahim is.

My Meeting With Anwar & Anthony & Jasmine

I like Anwar and Abdul but the fact is this company breeds distrust and so I find it hard to believe their motives.

Last week, I got a call from a rather nervous sounding Abdul telling me I was needed over at the ATG headquarters (ATG1). Was I about to be fired? I asked him why. Rather oddly, he told me that Talal had recommended that Ibrahim and Anwar seek my advice over the design for a new Art Dept in the basement of ATG1 because, “he’s good at that sort of thing”.

Now how would Talal know that I’m good at anything considering he has never once spoken to me? But being curious to know their real intentions, I agreed. Now I happen to know there’s a subtle mind-manipulation technique that states if, you want someone to like you, ask them to do you a favour. So my first thought was that they had two goals;

  1. Create a division between me and the rest of the Art Dept and especially Chris since I seemed to be siding with him too much.
  2. Get me on their side a bit by playing the aforementioned mind manipulation technique on me.

So I decided to go along with it to see what they might do.

Half an hour later I’m with Abdul and Anwar in the basement advising them on what to do with the basement. Fifteen minutes after that, I’m outside with Abdul, Anwar and Anthony and I’m being invited to the pub that evening to watch a football match.

Time to back up. The inclusion of Anthony is significant. As mentioned in a previous blog entry, I sat in on a meeting with Talal about the fortress wall that did not go well. The thing I noticed most was the complete breakdown of communication between the English and Jordanian crew. With one exception. Anthony. Somehow he has become ‘friends’ with Talal. I wanted to know how he did it in the hope that if there were bridges to be built between ATP and the international crew, he might offer a solution.

So a few weeks ago I emailed him asking to meet to talk about how I might work better with ATG so that “Medinah” could be the show it is meant to be. I then had to postpone meeting him because my family came to visit for five days. But I did not follow up and a week after they had gone I found myself standing outside ATG1 being invited to the pub by Anwar and Anthony after just having a subtle manipulation technique played on me. Coincidence? I’m not sure.

I decided not to go to the pub, but that evening,I was Skyping my family when my ATG cell phone rang. I didn’t know the number so I answered it and asked who it was. It was Anwar. He was coming to the hotel to pick me up. Hmmmmm…….

Since I was Skyping, I persuaded him to let me meet him at the pub. Which I did. Anwar was there. We chatted about ATG, Talal’s secret but no doubt smart mission, about ATG’s good intentions, and Anwar’s desire to quit producing and focus again on development (but Talal wouldn’t let him). Then Anthony turned up. I had a long chat with him about ATG. I told him that I had calculated that (comparatively) ATG had more money to spend on “Medinah” than was spent on “Game Of Thrones” – that made him somewhat silent as I don’t think he’d thought about that. Anyway, the evening wet well, I was made to feel welcome, I was invited to Anthony’s place the next time he does a bar-b-que and told that Anwar does a mean “leg of lamb”, and it all seemed rather good.

Of course, next day back in the Art Dept there was a few jokes about my going over to “the other side” (plus a possible hint of genuine suspicion from Dominic Smithers). I told them that I suspected this was a set-up. Chris agreed.

Later the next day, I went back to the basement because I felt the floor-plan Anwar had emailed me for the basement was wrong. It was, so I took new measurements. But as I was leaving I bumped into a young woman called Jasmine – who was loitering in the stairwell – who works for Fadi. She asked who I was. I told her. Then she asked me if I knew Anthony and started going on about how much she liked and respected him. She then said, “He’s a really nice person. You’re a nice person too. I can tell”. She then complimented me on my sunglasses which she loved. She was she flirting with me! But why? Was she a plant? Had Talal put her up to this? Was ATG really this transparently conniving?

I told Chris about this later on and said the discouraging thing was that I have never thought like this before. ATG has succeeded in making me paranoid. I can’t even bump into a woman on the stairs and not suspect she was put there deliberately! But it did seem very strange that I was constantly being reminded about Anthony – the person I had contacted to see if he could advise me on how to work better with ATG.

I should also mention that I have been told by Abdul that ATG spies on its employee’s emails. How do they do this? Anyone who has an ATG email account is not given the means to change their password. This means ATG has their password and can log in at any time to read their emails including emails sent to them from other accounts (such as emails I have sent to Anthony). So even if Anthony had not told Talal that I’d emailed him, Talal probably knew.

I emailed Jude a few days later (another email Talal would have seen) asking if I could get Jasmine’s email address and phone number. The reason I emailed Jude asking this was because I figured if she gave me the details without asking why I wanted them, Jasmine was probably a plant. And if Jude did ask why, it meant either she was not a plant or that Jude didn’t know what Talal was up to. A few days passed before she emailed me back saying she would need Fadi’s permission so could I explain why I needed Jasmine’s details. So I don’t yet know if Jasmine was a plant.

But I am expecting an invite to Anthony’s place soon. I’ll go. I like him. But I don’t know if I can trust him. We’ll see.

Meeting Given Go-Ahead. But No Go-Ahead For The $7,000 Set!

At the last minute, the meeting with Talal to discuss construction of the Fortress gates/wall was given the go-ahead. A meeting took place at 5pm in Talal’s boardroom. The model was conveyed to his office and since I cannot show a photo of the finished model, this blurred image will have to suffice. All I can say is, it looks pretty cool.

Chris postponed his flight so he could attend. I was not invited, but at Chris’s request I attended anyway. For the Art Director not to be there was ridiculous.

Fozan was there. He sat next to Talal and barely said a word. Instead he looked rather sad and afterwards he confessed to me that he found the tone of the meeting unpleasant.

The meeting did not go so well. Simon – the director – did an enthusiastic pitch which led to Talal rather rudely calling him a “used car salesman”. He then proceeded to rubbish the idea of building the set despite Simon pointing out that this was a $7,000 set being built for a series with a $37.5 million budget. Not building this set was clearly ridiculous. The entire UK crew knew it. But then Talal started to accuse the UK crew of repeatedly interrupting him despite his seldom allowing people to speak! And when he did not feel he was getting his way, he left the office in a childish huff. He finally came back after much persuasion. The meeting ended with no decision having been made. But that alone said plenty.

This was the first time I met Talal. At one point he referred to me as the “mysterious art director”. Clearly, he wasn’t sure about me yet – my silence making me an unknown quantity.

Talal was friendly and warm at first, but I noticed how all the ATG crew (with the exception of Fadi) sat with their eyes glued to the floor and their hands clasped, afraid to look Talal in the eye. I was reminded of my suspicion that this company seems to operate more like a cult with Talal as its figure-head.

I wasn’t impressed by Talal, but figuring out what he is up to and why is something else and abut that I am curious. Only time will reveal his “master plan” and for now at least, I’m prepared to wait and find out what it is.

FOOTNOTE ADDED MAY 1st 2016

I don’t recall if it was this meeting or the next where Talal said Ahmed did not know what he was doing. But I have a recording of him doing so, so it will be clear which meeting that was when the audio recordings goes live.

The recording of this meeting can be found by clicking here in which Talal claims – more-or-less – that Ahmed does not know what he is doing.
